Feel the History

The island was once a part of the Viking Kingdom of Sodor and Mann, and boasts the world's oldest continuously-functioning parliament, The Tynwald, which was formed in 979 AD. The Tynwald still creates the Isle of Man's laws, acting as the focal point of the Manx government, since the Isle of Man is a self-governing dependency of the British Crown. It is neither a part of the United Kingdom nor of the European Union.

The Manx National Heritage Society tries to actively preserve the island's ancient and colorful history by making it as real and present in modern society. "The Story of Mann" can be followed at various locations throughout the island, such as at the Manx Museum in the capital city of Douglas and the House of Manannan, a fascinating cultural centre in the city of Peel. The House of Manannan utilizes modern technology to re-enact the myths and superstitions of the island's cultural contributors, the Vikings, Celts and native Manx islanders. The House of Manannan houses the replica Viking ship, Odin's Raven, which was constructed to mark the 1000th anniversary of The Tynwald's continuous operation in 1979.

One of the Isle of Man's premier attractions is Rushen Abbey, which was founded in the 12th Century. It opened to the public in 2000, with live camera feeds providing visitors with a video link with archaeological excavations being done on-site to give them unfettered access to the most recent discoveries by the scientists. Near the Abbey is Castle Rushen, which is a well-preserved feudal fortification built by Magnus, the last of the great Viking rulers of Mann in the 13th Century. Another excellent and most dramatic medieval ruin is Peel Castle, which was once the ruling seat of the Kingdom of Mann. It can be toured via the Peel Castle Trail.
